West Midlands

Welcome to the West Midlands region of Dimensions

We support over 30 people with learning difficulties in the West Midlands. Our purpose is to help the people we support to live the life they want, and we believe that people with learning difficulties should be respected, have the same opportunities in life as everyone else, and make their own choices and decisions.

What we do

We provide a wide variety of support services in our region. These include:

  • Group living services, for people living in shared housing
  • Supported Living Services, providing individualised support packages for people living in their own homes
  • Registered residential care homes
  • Support for people with learning difficulties to find employment

We currently provide services in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin.

We are able provide other types of support service where appropriate, including transitional services for young people with a learning difficultly aged 16 – 21 years.

How we work

We endeavour to work in a 'person centred' way. This means that we focus on the person and their wants and needs. This is true for our employees as well as the people we support.

We are always looking at ways to ensure that we work in a person-centred way. These include:

  • developing person centred plans for the people we support that focus on their wants and dreams.
  • holding Regional Advisory Forums, where the people we support and relatives meet to discuss what we do and how we can do it better.
  • carrying out quality surveys with the people we support so that we can see if and where we can improve.
  • celebrating our successes with an annual celebration day, for employees the people we support and relatives.
  • holding regular employee meetings.

Nick's story

We supported Nick to move into his own flat. He used to be living with his mum and was getting frustrated at his lack of independence. He found a flat and we began to support him 24 hours a day.

We started to leave Nick at home for small periods of time, with support workers available on-call if they were needed. As his confidence grew, we increased his time alone. Gaining in confidence, Nick then asked for his sleepovers to stop. We worked with Nick using role play about the different scenarios that he could encounter while alone at night. We achieved the withdrawal of sleepover in two weeks.

Nick now has on call support. He makes a phone call in the morning to say he's up and fine, and support is planned week by week depending on his commitments. He is now an active member of his community, he sits on advisory boards and committees, and is much happier now he is in control of his own life.
